A 4-month-old baby was kidnapped and raped by a still unidentified suspect in Carcar, Cebu City on February 8, Wednesday.
According to ABS-CBN News, the baby was sleeping with her mother in their house when an unknown man barged in and abducted her Wednesday night. The family had no idea where the suspect would take her.
It was on Thursday morning when the victim’s grandfather found her her in a vacant lot 100-meters away from their house. The baby was crying and covered in blood when she was discovered. A bottle of ‘tuba’ or palm wine and a piece of her diaper were also recovered at the crime scene.
The 4-month-old victim was immediately taken to Carcar District Hospital.
The hospital’s medical officials found that the victim had lacerations in her genitals. These lacerations indicated that the baby was sexually assaulted before being abandoned in the vacant lot. According to officials, she is still recovering in the medical facility.
Unfortunately, her suspect is still unidentified as of this writing.
Officials are asking the public to take extra measures to avoid heinous incidents such as this.
The horrific incident enraged netizens. They expressed their disappointment over consecutive reports of kidnapping and rape, mostly occurring in remote rural areas. As they dwell on the underlying cause of such heinous crimes, some of them criticized the government’s inefficiency when it comes to executing laws meant to protect rape and kidnapping victims.
“Mga laman ng balita ngayon puro panggagahasa na lang.. Nakakalungkot at nakakagalit. Wala ng takot sa Diyos ang mga gumagawa, pati mga sanggol Please bring back DP para sa mga salot na ito!!” Anjheng Amores Mamaril wrote in frustration.
The issue on the approval of the death penalty was also brought to the discussion. The top comments on the news report’s Facebook page expressed criticisms towards institutions that disagree with the re-institution of the death penalty particularly the Catholic Church and the Commission on Human Rights.
Facebook user Kathrina Obrique Loriaga questioned the church’s stand to give rapists the opportunity to change their ways. She appealed to the administration’s opposition to consider these crimes and the possibility that it may happen to their own family members.
Netizens who are calling out for the approval of the death penalty took the opportunity to convince people that it could solve the increasing rape and kidnapping cases in the country.
